Osaka kushikatsu.... for the win!

Chris wanted to take me on a little side trip to Osaka.

Now Chris didn't tell me it was an island or that it had a castle. I only discovered that just now when I googled!

Osaka is a large port city and commercial center on the Japanese island of Honshu. It's known for its modern architecture, nightlife and hearty street food. The 16th-century shogunate Osaka Castle, which has undergone several restorations, is its main historical landmark. It's surrounded by a moat and park with plum, peach and cherry-blossom trees. Sumiyoshi-taisha is among Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines.

I didn't expect the bright and colorful downtown area. It's famous for its kushikatsu... skewers full of interesting foods. Luckily Chris and I were able to make a couple of careful choices because he can read and speak so well. One of my favorite things to witness was how restaurant workers would see us and try to speak in English or hand us a menu and Chris would speak perfect Japanese to them...

The first place we went to had great kushikatsu for cheap and GREAT beer. (Asahi Super Dry) ... The next place had skewers that were slightly more expensive and lemon sours and whiskey ginger ales. Confess to leaving the place a bit trollied! Luckily the walk back to the station helped sober me (us) up a bit.

And there was a Daiso on the way from the train station.

Chris miscalculated the trainfare a bit and it ended up being 900 yen one way. Oh well! A great little side trip... and of course we had Kohikan once we got back.
